Visiting the Dead in Deadwood

Left the Triangle Ranch B&B and headed for Deadwood with a quick retour to Mount Rushmore.

Near the Triangle Ranch was the Minuteman Museum. These were the nuclear missiles which were ready to launch from underground silos. I had assumed that this was one of the control centres but this was more a display of artefacts and photographs about the missile programme.

This is the approach to Mount Rushmore. The flags represent all 50 US states.

The rock carvings are just as spectacular as you would expect. The carvings represent George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

I then drove onto Deadwood as I am  a big fan of HBO's Deadwood series starring Ian McShane as Al Swearengen a bar and brothel keeper in mid-1880's South Dakota and there really was a saloon keeper with that name.

And here in the next grave lies his friend Calamity Jane. Anyone who remembers Doris Day singing 'The Deadwood Stage' might be shocked by how she is portrayed in the HBO series where she is seen as a profane alcoholic. Maybe that is why someone has left a bottle of bourbon. Many of the gravestones have pennies and stones placed on them.

In the part of the cemetery where the Chinese gold miners are buried is this small incinerator which was used to burn offerings to the gods.

At the top of a hill lies the grave of Seth Bullock. the sheriff of Deadwood.

This Boothill Tours bus goes around the cemetery  with boots hanging from the windows.

Walked past this gate sculpture in Deadwood.

Saw the 1935 Buick for sale along with this unknown car.

How Main Street, Deadwood looks now.

Given that back in the gold rush days Deadwood's streets would have been populated with prostitutes this lady might be the last one in Deadwood.

This is the bar where Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back while playing poker. He had his back to the door as his usual seat was taken.

A classic American car on Main Street.

Street appliances are covered with Deadwood photographs.

These wall displays show Calamity Jane top left and Hickock top right.
