New York tried to make me feel at home by providing a truly Scottish downpour. There would have been more photos but for the torrential rain.
My first shots of New York as we departed the Staten Island Ferry Port were so grey that I resorted to including other passengers just to provide some colour.
This shot of New York's buildings shrouded in mist gives the viewer an idea of how dull the day was. The Scots word 'Dreich' meaning a dull miserable day is very appropriate.
I had hoped that the approaching Statue of Liberty would provide some colour but sadly it was not to be
I think today's weather is New York's way of making sure I come back again to re-take these photos in better weather.
Some more shots from the Staten Island Ferry.
The returning ferry trip to New York was much improved when I found myself sitting to a really nice couple from Colorado and conversation ranged from politics to children. (Yes Anja this is why your ears were burning today)
I decided to walk to the Brooklyn Bridge using this flyover as protection from the downpour. I then came across this enclosed dog exercise area. A really good idea that other areas could adopt.
I decided to try and cross the Brooklyn Bridge, got half way and turned back due to the bleakness of the weather.
One of two eating places today on my must-see list was Katz's Delicatessen famous for its pastrami sandwiches. I engaged the customer in front of me who had a wonderful Brooklyn accent. As we waited to be served I happened to turn round and spied the couple from the ferry. I went over and re-introduced myself and they very graciously allowed me to take their photo just as they were leaving. So thank you Janet and Keith for giving me such a pleasurable surprise. I'm amazed how small a city of 8 million people can be when you can bump into someone you know.

This was my second choice of eateries today. How could I pass up a chance to eat at a place which shared my late wife's name? And the cheesecake was special.
The rest of the day was more sombre as I visited the 9/11 Memorial. This features the names of all the victims that day including the Pentagon attack. Even the six victims of the 1993 truck bombing of the World Trade Center are included. The pool covers the footprint of where the twin towers once stood. Water cascades down all four sides and empties into a central pool.
People have placed flowers and even small origami creations in the names of the victims.
These are photos of the 'Survivor Tree'. After the buildings collapse the burned stump of a pear tree was discovered amongst the debris. It was nursed back to health and replanted. The 9/11 guide pointed to the small drawings which say things like 'I am a survivor'. They were placed earlier that day by a group of schoolchildren.
This tall building is One World Trade Center. Built to replace the Twin Towers. It is 1,776 feet high as a reference to the year Independence was declared in America.
This small fire station sits alongside the 9/11 Memorial site.
This is the World Trade Center Station built to replace the station destroyed in the September 11 attacks. The architect said the building resembled a bird released from a child's hand.
