Surprised at Buffalo

Set off by car from Boston this morning to Buffalo but made a short detour to see Manchester-by-the-Sea and Gloucester both on the Massachusetts' coast.

The above photos were taken at Manchester-by-the-Sea where the Casey Affleck film of the same name was filmed. The film went on to win two Oscars.

This is the Fisherman's Memorial at Gloucester which is where the 2000 George Clooney film, The Perfect Storm was filmed. It was based on the true story of how the fishing boat, The Andrea Gail and all its crew were lost at sea in 1991.

This is the rest of the memorial with panels listing all the fisherman from Gloucester who have been lost at sea.

On the above panels can be seen the crew lost in 1991.

The above panels give some of the history of Gloucester's fishermen. The panels mention over 5,300 men lost at sea; an indication of how dangerous the job was and still is to this day.

This panel starts with a list of names in 1719 although fishing began one hundred years before.

Part of the smaller harbour at Gloucester. I wasn't able to get on to the main harbour where the film was set.

After a long drive from Massachusetts, the USA is a BIG country, I finally arrived in Buffalo at the wonderful Oscar's B&B where I drank wine on the porch all evening in the company of some very interesting and welcoming guests. At the end of the evening I was presented with an envelope from the lady of the house. What was in it? You'll have to read tomorrow's blog post to find out.
